Updated. As it now says, history and maps of both the current country, the principalities and the historical maps of the empire.

It shouldn't be a vast empire - probably quite a regional-based one around southern Uberia.

Commonwealth of Maraemo Empty History

Draft History

Maraemo was founded as a series of principalities hundreds of years ago. A feudal system operated throughout the land, and wars between princes were common but rarely led to much bloodshed. The country seemed isolated from the rest of Uberia thanks to the Absemtius Sea in the north. However the northern principalities often faced attacks from "northern" raiders and began developing vast ports and navies to counter them. The northern principalities became the richest in the Maraean peninsula, thanks to their control over shipping, especially imports and exports. These provinces dominated the country and rapidly became the strongest military force in all of sub-Absemtius Uberia. The north-eastern kingdom of Piendas, controlled the Aessus Strait and quickly began expanding it's armies and settlements across both sides of the strait, including into modern-day Rioja. Piendas, and neighbouring Uxtas, became regional powers in their own rights.

Over many centuries, Piendas became a dominant kingdom with vast wealth. It controlled all of Rioja and the mountainous nation of Ordino was destroyed and then annexed by Piendas' troops. However the King of Piendas had made few incursions in the Maraean peninsula, and the 12 principalities all remained independent. Piendas blockaded the Aessus Strait for a 10 year period, resulting in the starvation of thousands of people in Fondiar and Aestuar, who relied on the food and imported goods for their income and survival. The kings of both states surrendered when a vast fleet of Piendan troops attacked the coastline, and began a 15-year war across Maraemo.

Every principality collapsed under the weight of the Piendan military. Pavas, the southernmost kingdom on the border with Abasydia, was the final one to pledge allegiance to the Piendan imperial crown, having been surrounded by both armies of Piendas - one from the south, which had conquered right up the the Ehrlichian coast, and one from the north which had conquered every other kingdom. The Piendan monarchy created a vast Empire, covering all of sub-Absemtius Uberia except for Brescia.

This Empire, known as the First Maraean Empire, was ruled from Adessia, in Piendas, and had control over thousands of miles of land, hundreds of thousands of soldiers and one of the strongest navies of its age. The empire was ruled by an Imperial Majesty and many of the rulers were ruthless - the Pattreas Church was effectively owned by the monarchy once it occupied the state of Ifras and the Army, Church and institutions were all sworn to the crown. The Empire continued to expand into Ehrlichia and soon spread from the northern forests near Brescia, through the mountains of Ordino and Valence, to the edge of the world in Odivelas and to the deserts of Ehrlichia.

Maraemo's dominance of the region ended abruptly when the Piendan Queen failed to produce an heir. Following the death of the Imperial King, a civil war broke out as three families claimed the throne and fought over Adessia. The realm fragmented and former monarchies reclaimed their lands outside of the Maraean peninsula. After ten years of war, the Piendan Empire was a shadow of its former self - Only Ordino had remained loyal to the royal family, with all the other states having declared independence. However Ordino was lost following an invasion by Riojas.

The monarchy had lost all of its wealth and although the reigns of power had remained in Piendan hands, it was weak financially, economically and militarily.

MORE SOON.
